Survival of the Fittest in Pickering Monsoon
Location:
St. Mary Catholic Secondary School — Pickering, ON
Overview
If Week 1 of the ETFL Spring 2026 season proved anything, it’s that football players will battle through absolutely anything.
After a week of forecasts calling for heavy rain and dangerous winds, league officials and players hoped the storm system would either weaken or pass before kickoff. Instead, the ETFL opened its season in what can only be described as a full-scale football monsoon.
Rain poured relentlessly from the opening whistle at 9:00 AM and only intensified as the day progressed. Wind gusts ripped across the field throughout the morning, turning routine passes into adventures and forcing receivers, quarterbacks, and defenders alike to battle the elements as much as their opponents.
By halftime of Game 2, conditions had deteriorated to the point where league media crews were forced to shut down operations after canopy tents protecting the sidelines began lifting off the ground despite being fully spiked in. Things escalated even further during Game 3, when multiple tents took flight while players attempted to physically hold them down between plays.
The final damage report from the storm was almost as impressive as the football itself:
- 1 postponed game
- 3 canopy tents launched airborne
- 2 canopy tents officially destroyed
- Countless dropped footballs
- Endless soaked jerseys and frozen hands
The ETFL has seen rain before. It has seen wind before. But postponing a game due strictly to weather — without lightning being involved — is virtually unheard of in league history.
Still, through the chaos, three games were completed and several players managed standout performances despite conditions better suited for water polo than football.
Game 1 — 9:00 AM
Team Clarke def. Team Toi
Final Score: Team Clarke 34 — Team Toi 28

The opening game of the season quickly turned into one of the most entertaining matchups of the day.
Team Clarke, led by quarterback Germaine Clarke, came out firing early and established control almost immediately. Their offence moved efficiently despite the rain, capitalizing on early defensive breakdowns and building a sizeable lead before Team Toi could settle in.
Clarke’s squad spread the ball around effectively, with multiple receivers contributing touchdowns while the defense added key momentum-shifting plays of their own.
But Team Toi refused to go quietly.
Quarterback Toi Simon rallied his team late in the game behind a strong offensive push that nearly erased the deficit entirely. Stephano Cavaliere emerged as a major playmaker during the comeback attempt, while Jordon Campbell and Presh Singarajah also found the endzone to keep the pressure on.
Despite the late surge, Team Clarke managed to hold on defensively in the closing moments to secure the season-opening victory.
Team Clarke Standouts
- Luca Cairns Celebre — 2 TDs, 2-point convert
- Connor Tamblyn — 1 TD
- Adrian McIntosh — 1 TD
- Matthew Singh — 1 TD
- Thomas Lawrence — 2 converts, 1 INT
- Josh Devine — 1 INT
Team Toi Standouts
- Stephano Cavaliere — 2 TDs
- Jordon Campbell — 1 TD, 2-point convert
- Presh Singarajah — 1 TD
- Kayrus Sam — 2-point convert, 1 INT
- Aaron Karamath — 1 sack
Game 2 — 10:30 AM
Team Glavic def. Team Scoop
Final Score: Team Glavic 25 — Team Scoop 13

While the scoreboard may suggest a comfortable win for Team Glavic, the game itself was much tighter than the final margin indicates.
Chad “Scoop” Mallen’s Team Scoop consistently moved the ball well between the 20-yard lines and generated several promising drives throughout the game. However, worsening rain conditions made execution near the goal line extremely difficult. Multiple dropped passes in key redzone moments prevented Team Scoop from fully capitalizing on their offensive opportunities.
Meanwhile, Marko Glavic’s squad did exactly what strong teams do in ugly conditions: minimize mistakes and capitalize on the opponent’s errors.
Team Glavic’s offence delivered timely scores while the defense held firm whenever momentum began shifting. Their ability to stay composed in deteriorating weather proved to be the difference.
By the end of the game, the rain had intensified dramatically, with standing water beginning to develop across portions of the field.
Team Glavic Standouts
- Emmanuel Beals — 2 TDs
- Yasser Zaheed — 1 TD
- Heinz Stork — 1 TD
- Khari Francis — 1-point convert
Team Scoop Standouts
- Brent Shepherd — 1 TD, 1-point convert
- Domenic Gnurlantino — 1 TD
Game 3 — 12:00 PM
Team Glavic def. Team Heaney
Final Score: Team Glavic 15 — Team Heaney 0

By kickoff of Game 3, the weather had officially crossed from “bad football conditions” into outright survival mode.
Heavy rain and violent wind gusts made throwing the football extremely difficult, while footing on both sides of the ball became nearly impossible.
Team Glavic entered the matchup with a significant advantage after already battling through one full game in the storm. They understood the conditions, adjusted accordingly, and embraced the grind.
Team Heaney, meanwhile, walked straight from the comfort of their vehicles into the center of the chaos. To make matters worse, several late arrivals forced Andrew Heaney’s squad to begin the game shorthanded, leaving them immediately behind the eight-ball.
Before Team Heaney could fully settle in and get enough personnel on the field to compete effectively, Team Glavic had already built control of the game.
As conditions worsened further, both offences struggled to sustain drives, with possessions quickly turning into repeated three-and-outs. Eventually, officials called the game early due to safety concerns surrounding the weather and flying equipment around the field.
Team Glavic Standouts
- Heinz Stork — 1 TD
- Khosya Henderson — 1 TD
- Eric Perez-Salas — 1 INT
- Trae Wright — 1 INT
- Daniel Gagne — 1 INT
Team Heaney Standouts
- Survived the storm.
Game 4 — 1:30 PM
Team Jeff vs. Team Pacas
Final Score: Postponed

The highly anticipated matchup between Jeffrey Paras’ Team Jeff and Rob Pacas’ Team Pacas never officially began.
As the storm intensified throughout the afternoon, wind conditions became increasingly dangerous, with multiple tents blowing across the facility and equipment becoming difficult to secure safely.
League officials ultimately made the decision to postpone the game in the interest of player and spectator safety.
The matchup has officially been rescheduled for:
Saturday, June 6
3:00 PM
Given the circumstances, it was unquestionably the correct decision — although both teams will now enter Week 2 with plenty of extra anticipation and energy.
Final Thoughts
Week 1 of the ETFL Spring 2026 season may ultimately be remembered less for the standings and more for the pure chaos Mother Nature unleashed on Pickering.
Still, despite the brutal weather, soaked footballs, destroyed tents, and freezing temperatures, players competed hard from start to finish and set the tone for what should be another unforgettable ETFL season.
If this is how the season started, the rest of Spring 2026 should be absolute madness.
